History
Our Roots and Evolution
Established in 1944 under the Division of Home Economics, the WVU Early Learning Institute (formerly the WVU Child Development Laboratory School) was founded by Karina Thure Wood. The school was created to provide observation and practicum experiences for future parents, preschool teachers, and nutrition students.
Originally located on Willey Street, the school served children aged 2.5 to 4 years in a structured, hands-on learning environment. Over the years, the Early Learning Institute has moved to several locations:
- Price Street (1950)
- Campus Drive (1963)
- Rawley Lane (1978)
- Krepps Park (2009)
Leadership Through the Years
The WVU Early Learning Institute has been guided by a number of directors, each contributing to its growth and development. These directors include:
- Karina Thure Wood (1950-1954)
- Gladys Ayersman (1954–1967)
- Dr. Bobbie Gibson Warash (1980–2017)
- Melissa Workman (2018-2023)
- Dr. Ashley Martucci (2023–2024)
- Allison Stump (Current)
Our Present Mission
Today, the WVU Early Learning Institute operates under the College of Applied Human Sciences and the School of Education. We continue our mission of excellence in early childhood education, providing a nurturing and enriching environment for children and serving as a vital resource for WVU students and faculty.
