Lab School Experience

We serve as a model early childhood education program, demonstrating best practices in teaching, learning, and care. Our classrooms are designed to provide a rich and stimulating environment where children can thrive.

• Best Practices: We implement and model the most current, research-backed teaching strategies and curricula, such as the Reggio Emilia-inspired “environment as teacher”.

• High Standards: As a Type 1 licensed center, we maintain a high adult-to-child ratio, often enhanced by the presence of university student assistants.

The Early Learning Institute plays a vital role in the training of future educators and professionals. We partner with various departments within West Virginia University to provide field placements and supervised observation opportunities for WVU students. Students gain hands-on experience working with young children, observing child development, and learning effective teaching strategies.

• Field Placements: Students complete structured practicums where they assist lead teachers in implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and project-based learning.
• Supervised Observation: Future professionals observe child development first-hand, learning to conduct individualized assessments and manage classroom dynamics.
• Work-Study Positions: Students have the opportunity to serve as assistant teachers, gaining deep professional experience over multiple years.
• Mentorship: All interns and student workers are supervised by our certified staff, ensuring they learn the high standards of the NAEYC Code of Ethics.

We are committed to collaborating with WVU departments on curriculum research and development. Our school serves as a living laboratory where faculty can conduct research, explore new teaching methods, and contribute to the field of early childhood education.
