Curriculum & Learning

Our curriculum is based on Learning Beyond Paper, a research-backed framework approved by the state of West Virginia. We enhance this foundation with:

• Reggio Emilia Inspiration: We utilize the environment to provoke imagination, questioning, and exploration.

• Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Our staff follows NAEYC guidelines to build positive relationships and a community-focused curriculum.
• Active Learning: We prioritize hands-on experimentation over traditional desk-based instruction or worksheets.

Literacy is woven into every aspect of our environment. We believe literacy is a continuous process that begins with exposure to meaningful and functional print.

• Play Plans: Children create daily “play plans,” dictating or drawing their goals to learn that print is functional.
• Print-Rich Environment: Labels, signs, and children’s dictations are posted throughout the classroom at eye level.
• Language Experience: Teachers print children’s spoken words to help them understand the connection between written and spoken language.

We use a variety of methods to capture a comprehensive picture of each child’s growth.

• Observation: Teachers record detailed notes and take photos of children engaged in naturally occurring behaviors and interactions.
• Work Samples: Art and project-based work serve as evidence of the child’s unique learning journey.
• Early Learning Scale (ELS): We use this state-approved tool to measure progress in social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development.
• Portfolios: Documentation is shared with families through conferences and portfolios to support learning both at school and at home.
